Our Story

JT had just gotten married and he and his wife set out to buy their first piece of furniture together–a new mattress. The search began at local mattress showrooms; vast fields of mattresses neatly laid out under the buzz of fluorescent lights. Pushy salesmen pushed them to buy a fully loaded, feature-rich memory foam mattress. For $3,300 it should have been the pinnacle of comfort, but it wasn’t. To make matters worse, the return policy rendered it impossible to return. It was like car shopping. Actually it was worse than car shopping.

At work the next day, he shared his story with Daehee. The two friends from college had been working together at a company in Palo Alto, and unsurprisingly had similar experiences. There was work to be done.

We believe that business can be honest and premium products don’t need remote controls and payment plans. Especially not mattresses.

Sleep on an Honestly Crafted Mattress at a Fair Price

What kind of mattress is a Tuft & Needle?

The Tuft & Needle Mattress is a high-quality polyether foam mattress made in the USA. Designed to be a single firmness, we are continuously tweaking the specifications to be universally comfortable for everyone. Our foam supports the natural posture of your spine, relieving back, shoulder, and neck problems and naturally breathes so you don't sleep hot.

What is the difference between the Five and the Ten Mattresses?

The Ten is our flagship mattress due to our tireless efforts to perfect a single, universal firmness. The Ten offers a more traditional aesthetic (10" thick) along with a higher weight capacity, providing increased support for those who need it. Most of our customers select the Ten model.

Alternatively, the Five is low-profile mattress which is ideal for the minimalist. Incredibly supportive at only 5” thick, the Five is designed for those who do not want to compromise the function of a product while refining it down to the essentials elements.

How does Tuft & Needle compare to a memory foam mattress?

Although memory foam feels comfortable at first, its drawbacks are sleeping hot and lacking necessary support. Compared to memory foam, our polyether foam's design offers consistent, healthy support and does not become hot during the night.

How does Tuft & Needle compare to a latex foam mattress?

Latex foam is known for being breathable and supportive though not the best material for pressure relief. Our foam provides enhancements over latex with support, breathability, and pressure relief but at a much lower cost. It's important to note that all latex foams used in mattresses are not 100% natural when others claim them to be—at most they are about 95% natural due to the curing package required to set the material. Latex normally is synthetic and is in many cases 0% to 30% natural due to chemicals and fillers.

If Tuft & Needle is such a great mattress, why does it cost so little?

Surprisingly, it doesn't cost a ton of money to craft a comfortable mattress with quality ingredients. We make quality mattresses and offer them for an honest price. It’s such a straight-forward system, you’d think more people would follow it.

How long does it take to get my mattress?

It varies depending on our volume and your location. In most cases, you can expect delivery in about 1-2 weeks. Shoot us an email or give us a call for a better estimate of delivery to your specific location.

What is the transit time to my location?

We ship FedEx Ground from our facility in Southern California. Here are some estimated transit times based on FedEx's service maps:

1-2 business days to California and the southwestern states
3-4 business days to the Pacific Northwest, the central states and the Midwest
4-6 business days to New England and other East Coast locations
6-7 business days to Hawaii and Alaska locations.

Can I request custom instructions for delivery?

While we're unable to schedule specific dates or times for delivery, we'd love to help with custom delivery instructions as best as we can. Just let us know after you place your order, and we will work with FedEx to try to arrange this once your mattress has shipped.

Can you ship to Canada?

We are not able to ship internationally at this time. When we send our Mattresses to customers, it's not just the product we're providing but the full experience - most importantly the 30 night sleep trial to make sure it's a good fit for you.

If something happened to the Mattress, like a warranty issue, we'd want to take care of it. However, being out of our service region means we wouldn't be able to. We wouldn't want to put you in that position.

Drop us a note via email or follow our social media profiles, and we'd be happy to let you know when we do.

Where is my package? FedEx Tracking page says it is delivered but I have not received it.

Send us an email right away and we will work with FedEx to track down your package. In the case that the carrier misplaced or delivered your package to the wrong address, it can take up to 2 business days for them to complete their investigation with the driver. We will continue to work with FedEx to get you your mattress as soon as possible.

Why is my order status not being updated?

We do not update the order status until your mattress has shipped. Once your mattress has shipped you will receive an email with the shipping details. If more than a week has passed, please send us an email at support@tuftandneedle.com or let us know by phone at (877) 842-2586 so we can further assist.

What is the Sleep Trial?

We believe that you have to spend more than a few minutes on a mattress to know if it's right for you.
That's why we offer the 30 night sleep trial. If you don't like it, we'll take it back with no questions asked, but feedback is always appreciated.

How do I return my mattress?

To return your mattress, we work together to donate it to a local charity or non-profit. It's that easy. Once your mattress is donated, send us a scanned or photographed copy of your donation receipt via email and we'll process your refund in full.

We're experts at finding donation locations. If you're unsure of where to donate or need help, just let us know by phone or email support@tuftandneedle.com; we'd be happy to help find places! If we can't find a donation location, then we'll coordinate with a 3rd party pickup service free of charge.

NOTE: If you recently received your mattress, we recommend allowing 1-2 weeks of use before initiating your return. It can take a little bit of time for your mattress to break in, and for you to become acclimated to it.

Do I have to ship it back in its original box if I decide to return?

With the exception of New York returns, you do not need to keep the packaging. If you live in New York, we recommend keeping the plastic to make donations or recycling easier.

Instead of shipping it back to us, we work together to donate the mattress to a nearby charity. Send us a scanned or photographed copy of your receipt and we'll process your full refund. If no charity is available nearby for donation, we'll arrange a 3rd party pickup for the mattress.

Is the return process different if I ordered through Amazon?

If your mattress was "Sold by Amazon," then all returns and customer support questions should go through Amazon's support. We're always here to help with general questions, but they'll handle all returns, exchanges, and warranty issues. Follow these few steps to begin your Amazon return:

1. Go to the Amazon return page at https://www.amazon.com/returns/order
2. Find your item in the list
3. Click "Return or Replace Item"
4. Amazon will help schedule a removal or arrange return shipping

If your mattress was "Sold by Tuft & Needle," then we will handle all aspects of your order and you can reach out to us by email, chat, or phone for help with returning, exchanging, or claiming the warranty.

Can I exchange my mattress for a different size during the 30-Night-Trial?

Yes, exchanges are available during the 30 night trial. Send us an email and let us know you'd like to make an exchange. With your approval, we'll process or return the remaining balance on your purchasing card. We cover the shipping cost of one exchange per household per year. Please note that exchanging your mattress will void the 30 night trial.

Once you receive your new mattress, donate the original to a nearby non-profit or charity and send us a scanned or photographed copy of your donation receipt via email. If you're unsure of where or how to donate, let us know by phone or email support@tuftandneedle.com; we'll help you find some places.

Once I send in my donation receipt, how long does it take to get my refund?

Once we receive your proof of donation, our system processes the refund within 24 to 72 hours. If you do not see it back in your account within 3-5 business days, contact your bank or financial institution for further information.

Can I get a replacement cover?

Tuft & Needle warrants any damages in the cover due to defects in materials and workmanship when used normally for a period of 10 years from the date of original purchase. Shoot us an email or give us a call if you have any concerns.

What if the foam forms irregular indentations and is getting body impressions?

This is unlikely to happen for at least 7-10 years. We consider increased softness such as body impressions or permanent indentations to fall under our 10 year warranty. If you observe a visible indentation greater than 3/4 of an inch (about the length of your thumb, from tip to knuckle) please let our team know so that we can help you replace the mattress.

Why do you only offer a 10 year warranty when other companies offer 20 years?

Warranties that are more than 10 years are generally prorated, which means for every year you own it, you would receive less and less credit. The reality is, other companies make it extremely difficult to prove damage and redeem the warranty.

We help honor our customers loyalty by acting in good faith, and that means transparency, honesty, and accuracy in our pricing, and in our warranties. Send us some photographs, we'll help diagnose the issue, and we'd be happy to send a replacement per our warranty.

How does the mattress feel to sleep on?

Our product team designed both the Five and Ten to fit the most people with the most comfort, providing proper support throughout the body and relieving critical pressure points.

How firm are the Tuft & Needle Mattresses?

Both the Five and the Ten are designed to be plush on top while remaining supportive. Put differently, our mattress are about a 6 or 7 on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being a feather pillow and 10 a hardwood floor.

What does the mattress look like?

Our mattress is designed with square edges and corners. Our Tuft & Needle logo is lightly woven into the fabric of the smooth white cover.

We have some awesome product photography on our website. Check out the Buy Now page to see photos from all sides of the mattress.

Can I sleep directly on my Tuft & Needle mattress?

You can, but you should always use sheets (and ideally a protector too). You'll get the most out of your Tuft & Needle mattress by washing or changing your sheets weekly.

How do I maintain my mattress if I use it on the floor?

With all mattresses, there is a chance of mildew when it lacks airflow, especially over an organic (e.g. cotton rug, plywood) or moist surface. If you live in a humid climate, we recommend that you use a bed frame that lifts the mattress off the ground.

For best care on the floor, we suggest that you regularly (once or twice a week) prop-up your mattress to refresh the air-flow; this will help keep your Tuft & Needle mattress dry and clean.

Do I need to air the mattress?

In most cases, you won't need to air the mattress. We use spacer cloth on the mattress bottom to optimize air flow. For floor use in more humid climates, we suggest that you regularly prop-up your mattress to refresh the air-flow; this will help keep your Tuft & Needle mattress dry and clean.

Do I need to flip my mattress?

Our foam core has been designed to have a specific top and bottom. Always keep the zippered side down.

Can I clean the cover?

Don't machine wash or dry the mattress cover; it may shrink. Instead, unzip and remove the cover and spot clean with a mild detergent - gently dabbing the cover rather than rubbing it. Make sure the cleaned area is 100% dry before replacing the cover or placing sheets and blankets back on the mattress.

What is the mattress' foam density?

The foam we designed currently has a density of 2.8 lbs for our top layer and about 1.8 lbs for our base layer.

When shopping for a foam mattress, be sure to look for higher density foam. We recommend something above 1.8 lbs. Additionally, when looking for memory foam you'll want something even denser like 4+ lbs.

What makes up the foam core?

What's inside our Tuft & Needle Mattress is two layers of high-quality, high density polyether foam, a synthetic material, blended to our design and specifications. The foam has been tested to be safe by CertiPur standards and is long-lasting because of its density.

What is the cover made of?

It is a high quality rayon and polyester performance fabric.

Will the mattress smell or off-gas?

Some people notice a new mattress smell for a few days, but it goes away quickly. Initially, we suggest letting the mattress air out by removing any sheets or mattress protector that cover it. You can leave our fabric cover on. The smell comes from the freshly new foam being packaged during transit and not from any harmful chemicals.

Do you use a flame retardant?

Our fire barrier is essentially a fabric blend. It's mostly rayon, blended with small amounts of polyester and silica (very fine-grained sand). When it's blended like that, it's inherently flame retardant. This fabric blend fits on the mattress like a sock, underneath the cover, and there are no chemical flame retardants in our foam. Our fire barrier is TB 117 compliant.

Can I have a sample of the foam or cover fabric?

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide samples of our mattress. Our foams have been tested by CertiPUR-US for off-gassing, formaldehyde, and a host of other toxins. Feel free to read more about that here: http://certipur.us/pages/

What type of bed frame should I use with the mattress?

Tuft & Needle mattresses are designed to be compatible with most options such as a slatted frame, platform frame, box spring, hardwood floor or synthetic carpeted floor. The Five is slimmer than the Ten so you may feel the frame beneath it if you get on your knees. You may be interested in the Ten model if that is a concern for you.

Do you carry the frame or furniture pictured on your site?

Any furniture showed on our website is for visual purposes only. If you like to know the brands of products we use we'd be happy to let you know. You can reach us by phone, email, live chat, or through Twitter @tuftandneedle or on Facebook at http://facebook.com/tuftandneedle

What do you mean by "platform," "slatted," "slats," "foundation," etc.?

Platform Bed Frame - Platform bed frames come in a variety of styles, and they either feature horizontal slats (think planks, usually wooden) or a solid platform for the mattress to rest on. Both the Five and Ten Mattresses are compatible with platform beds.

Slatted Bed Frame - A slatted bed frame is another way of saying platform frame and gets its name from the characteristic horizontal slats that support the mattress. For the Five, we recommend that slats not be spaced more than 3 inches apart.

Slats - Slats are the planks that are usually placed horizontally on a slatted or platform frame. Their purpose is to support the mattress and their function is analogous to that of a box spring.

Metal Bed Frame - Sometimes called a Hollywood bed frame, the metal frame is a traditional bed frame that supports a box spring + mattress.

Box Spring - Traditionally featuring a wooden frame and springs, most modern box springs are, in fact, slatted or solid foundations. Their purpose is to provide even support under the mattress, and they work with either a metal bed frame or a platform bed. Both the Five and Ten Mattresses are compatible with modern box springs.

Solid Foundation - A solid foundation provides the support of a platform frame or slats, though it looks very much like a box spring and is used the same way: metal frame + solid foundation + mattress. Most modern box springs are solid or slatted foundations.

What kind of sheets will fit my Tuft & Needle mattress?

Standard bed sheets will fit both the Tuft & Needle Five and Ten. We have found that when the fitted sheet has very strong elastic sewn all the way around, they fit nicely.

Here are a couple we like:

Northern Nights for the Home
Restoration Hardware

Other brands and stores we've had good experiences with include Eddie Bauer, TJMaxx, Target and even Ikea.

Are there any discounts, promotions or coupon codes?

We started Tuft & Needle because of our own experiences with mattress gimmicks. This industry is already full of discount programs that deceptively inflate prices and trick people into thinking they are getting a deal. We believe that everyone should get the same price—the fair price.

How do I make use of the warranty if I think my Tuft & Needle Mattress might be defective?

Your Tuft & Needle Mattress is covered by warranty for 10 years against defects, and you can find the warranty here: https://www.tuftandneedle.com/about/warranty.

If you discover a defect in your Tuft & Needle, just email us support@tuftandneedle.com or give us a call at (877)842-2586 to let us know what's going on, and we'll go from there. A couple pictures may help illustrate your concern, so please include those when possible.

What size should I purchase?

Twin - Best for average height adults and children. This size typically fits trundle and bunk beds.
Twin XL - Recommended for taller youth and adults. This size is commonly seen in college dorms. Two Twin-XL side by side will equal a King size.
Full - A spacious, comfortable sleeping space for a single adult, but a tight sleeping space for two.
Queen - The most popular size for two sleepers.
King - The most space available width-wise. Great for two sleepers that like to spread out, or for sleeping with kids or pets.
California King - The most space available length-wise. Great for two sleepers, or for sleeping with kids or pets.

Should I use a mattress protector?

The soft mattress cover is not water resistant, so using a mattress protector can help prolong the life of your mattress, protecting it from spills, as well as dirt or allergens. We suggest using a mattress protector with your Tuft & Needle Mattress - especially if children or pets are using the mattress.

What should I look for in a mattress protector?

A mattress protector should be breathable as well as moisture-resistant. These have become easier to find as they've become more prevalent.

Here are a couple we like for the Ten:
Hospitology
Luna-AllSizes
SafeRest-AllSizes

These covers should fit well on the Five.
RestGuard-Twin
SafeRest-TwinXL/Queen

If you need some other recommendations, don't hesitate to shoot us an email at support@tuftandneedle.com.

What types of mattress protectors are there?

There are three basic types of mattress protective covers: encasement, fitted-sheet and pad. Encasement is just like it sounds; the encasement protector completely covers the mattress. The second type of protector fits the mattress like a fitted sheet. Both styles of protector are popular with people who suffer from allergies. Mattress pads are the most minimal and typically have elastic straps at the corners to secure it to the mattress.

Can you ship to Alaska or Hawaii?

We can now ship to Alaska and Hawaii.

Due to the increased costs of shipping, a charge is added to orders being sent to an Alaska or Hawaii address. The shipping costs range from $100-$190 per mattress, based on model, size, and destination.

This charge will be reflected in your shopping cart as you check out. You will know the total cost before you buy.

What is the shipping weight of the Ten?

You can view all of the shipping info on our Buy Now page.

Check it out here.

What is the shipping weight of the Five?

You can view all of the shipping info on our Buy Now page.

Check it out here.

How big is the shipping box of the Ten?

The size of the shipping box varies depending on the size of the mattress. The Ten will ship in these size boxes:

10 Twin: 45" x 16" x 16"
10 XL: 45" x 16" x 16"
10 Full: 60" x 16" x 16"
10 Queen: 66" x 16" x 16"
10 King: 81" x 16" x 16"
10 Cal King: 81" x 16" x 16"

How big is shipping box of the Five?

The Five fits in an equally uniform size box no matter the size of the mattress. The box dimensions are 45" x 16" x 16".

What are the dimensions of the Ten?

The Tuft & Needle Ten Mattress is 10-inches thick and matches standard mattress dimensions.
Twin: 39" x 75" x 10"
TwinXL: 39" x 80" x 10"
Full: 54" x 75" x 10"
Queen: 60" x 80" x 10"
King: 76" x 80" x 10"
Cal-King: 72" x 84" x 10"

What are the dimensions of the Five?

The Tuft & Needle Five Mattress is 5-inches thick and matches standard mattress dimensions.
Twin: 39" x 75" x 5"
TwinXL: 39" x 80" x 5"
Full: 54" x 75" x 5"
Queen: 60" x 80" x 5"
King: 76" x 80" x 5"

Does the Tuft & Needle mattress need a box spring?

The short answer is no. We like platform or slatted frames because they have a great aesthetic. It isn't necessary to purchase a box spring if you don't already have one, but you can use one if you'd like to. They can be used with either the Tuft & Needle Five or Ten.

Can I use the Tuft & Needle mattress with a futon?

The Tuft & Needle Five will work with most futon frames though it might take some maneuvering to get it to fit just right. You might notice it bunch up when it's in sofa mode, but it will bounce right back out when you have it in bed mode. If you do decide to use it with one, we'd love to hear what you think about the compatibility.

The Tuft & Needle Ten is too thick to fold properly on a futon frame. We don't recommend using it this way.

Can the Tuft & Needle mattress fold?

The Tuft & Needle Five Mattress can be folded in half, from head to foot, but it needs some help to stay there. Due to the resilient nature of the mattress, it would "pop open" without something to hold it down though a couple heavy books will do the trick.

What are the weight capacities of the Tuft & Needle mattresses?

The Tuft & Needle Five will support up to 300 lbs per person, for a total of 600 lbs on a two sleeper mattress. The Tuft & Needle Ten will support up to 500 lbs per person, for a total of 1000 lbs on a two sleeper mattress.

Why do you offer a 30 night sleep trial and not longer or shorter?

A super long trial seems gimmicky to us. Our sleep trial is 30 nights long because most people can determine if they like the mattress in two-three weeks. If the mattress isn't right for you, we want to make returns as hassle-free and easy as possible.

We're also not sticklers so don't worry if you miss the cut off date by a day or two. We begin counting 30 days based on when your mattress was delivered to you, not when you purchase it online.

How do I unbox the mattress?

Position your mattress on top of your bed frame, and carefully cut the outside layer plastic off your mattress using scissors. There are a few layers of plastic, but you'll know when you start to get to the end.

Roll the mattress out, then cut off the remaining plastic and watch it expand. Let it expand 2-3 hours and your mattress will be ready for sleep.

Where can I read reviews of the Tuft & Needle Mattress?

All of our reviews are genuine and by our real customers. Our mattress is the #1 rated mattress on Amazon and you can read our reviews on their website.

Where can I try this out? Do you have a retail or store location?

Right now, we're all online with a small showroom in our office in Phoenix, Arizona. This is another big reason why our 30 night trial is so awesome. You can try the mattress for 30 nights, and if you don't like it for any reason, return it for a full refund.

If you're in the Phoenix area and you'd like to see our showroom, send us an email at support@tuftandneedle.com so we can set you up with an appointment.

Does the Tuft & Needle mattress work on an adjustable bed frame?

We've heard great feedback regarding adjustable bed frames with our mattress. They should work pretty well. If you decide to use our mattress with one, we'd love to hear what you think!

Can I use the Tuft & Needle mattress with a heating pad?

Yes, you can use our Tuft & Needle mattress with a heating pad and it will not damage the foam. If you use a specific heating pad that works great, drop us a line and let us know.

What do I do with my old mattress?

As soon as your Tuft & Needle mattress arrives, we suggest our customers schedule a Salvation Army pickup using: http://satruck.org or work with your local Saint Vincent de Paul Society. We've also worked with local churches and homeless shelters to pick up the old mattresses. Please call or e-mail us if you need some donation location suggestions and we'd be happy to help.

Can the Tuft & Needle mattresses be stacked?

We don't recommend stacking the mattresses. When on top of one another, the mattress can become incredibly soft with little to no support. It's also wobbly and can be unsafe. It's best to use the mattress with a firm foundation to get the proper support and comfort.

We have iterated on a universal comfort with the parameters of a firm foundation such as a floor, slatted frame, or boxspring. Anything different would change the comfort to be something that we don't understand and haven't tested. Not only that, but it's not great for the health of the mattress over time.

Can you make custom sizes?

We're currently unable to offer any custom sizes because we're still a small company trying to meet the demands at our current capacity.
