Full vs Queen Size "“ Which One Is Right For Your Space?

When you’re shopping for a mattress, the last thing you want to do is regret the size you chose. A mattress is a long-term investment and it can be hard to visualize what your space will be like in ten, five, or ever two years. You might be asking yourself, “Should I get a full or a queen?”, and really the difference between full mattress dimensions and queen mattress dimensions could potentially make or break your quality of sleep, especially if you have a partner.
For years, we only ever needed a full-sized mattress. While the way we sleep has changed dramatically in the last hundred years, one of the biggest (No pun intended!) changes has been our need for space when we hit the hay.
After larger models became popular and were made into standard mattress sizes in the ’50s and ’60s, fewer couples opted for full-size mattresses and upgraded their mattresses to queens. As you start shopping, you might be wondering which one is the better fit for you and your space.
Full-Size Mattress Dimensions
A full-size mattress is the same length as a twin mattress at 75 inches long, but nearly double the width at 54 inches wide. This is why you’ll often hear a full referred to as a “double” when checking out bed models. This was the most common bed size for decades before marketing teams started pushing larger models on consumers.
The full is really great for a guest room if you’re short on space or for kids who aren’t quite ready for a wider and longer bed. If you have a cramped space and intend on sleeping alone, a full-size mattress might be the perfect solution for you, though if you have a partner, things can get pretty tight without the extra six inches a queen mattress provides.
Queen Size Mattress Dimensions
A queen size mattress is perfect for a little more breathing room at 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. A queen is five inches longer than either a twin sized mattress or a full size bed. Built for couples, the queen mattress gives you extra length and sleeping space without consuming your bedroom the way a king size mattress might. Two people can fit pretty well without needing to reserve six feet of space for a king bed.
Queens are also ideal if you frequently have couples staying in your guest room for long stretches of time, as a full may start to feel too snug pretty quickly.
Full vs Queen Size – A Comparison
MATTRESS DIMENSIONS | |||||
TWIN | TWIN XL | FULL | QUEEN | KING | CAL KING |
39″ X 75″ | 39″ X 80″ | 54″ X 75″ | 60″ X 80″ | 76″ X 80″ | 72″ X 84″ |
Full beds and queen beds are probably two of the most popular mattress sizes out there. And that’s because, for most people, that’s what fits their size requirements, as well as their spacial needs.
Now, let’s compare the two a little more to see how they stack up side-by-side.
Full Bed vs Queen Comfort
Queens and fulls are common mattress sizes and they’re easy to come by. If your budget is tight and you’d like to get the most for your money, a full might seem like the best option, but it’s good to keep in mind that you’re purchasing a product that will last you, on average, the better part of a decade. What makes sense right now may not 7 years down the line, so be sure to consider all of your needs when you purchase.
For most single sleepers, a full bed probably offers enough space for them to sleep comfortably. But that’s probably not the case for couples. Most couples find that fulls are way too small and don’t allow them the sleeping room they need. If you’re part of a couple, or you’re preparing to be part of one in the future, you may want to invest a little more into a queen mattress just so you have that extra space ready to go.
You’ll sleep so much more comfortably in a queen than you would a full.
That being said, if you’re not one who shares a bed, a full will probably be perfect for you. And ultimately, the quality of your mattress is going to affect comfort levels for an individual more than the actual size of the bed.
Full Size Bed vs Queen Dimensions – Space Requirements
It’s generally accepted that a full bed fits best in a room that’s at least 10 X 12 feet whereas a queen bed can fit comfortably in a room that’s 12 X 12 feet. This isn’t to say that these mattresses can’t fit in smaller rooms. They can. But most people are accustomed to having a certain amount of space in their room and these room dimensions help give you that space.
If bedroom space is a big concern for you, maybe the size of your room should affect the size of your mattress and bed frame.
Queen vs Full Mattress Price
It should go without saying that bigger beds cost more than smaller beds. So, if everything else is equal, the full bed will be a better deal because it’s less expensive. But that’s rarely the case.
As we’ve already said. It’s hard for two people to sleep in a full bed. So you might pay less money by getting a full sized mattress, but you’ll ultimately pay with the years of discomfort that comes from sleeping too close together. You may be locked into a certain price bracket due to the number of people that’ll be using the mattress, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a good deal on a quality mattress.

Queen Size vs Full Size Accessories

Fortunately for you, bed accessories are easy to find for both full and queen-sized beds. Whether you need a medical aid or you simply want to buy new sheets, finding that thing you need should be no problem with either a full or queen-sized mattress.
The differences between a full and queen may seem to amount to just a few inches, but considering your space, your personal needs, or the needs of your guest can definitely impact what you should be investing in.
