We love a good platform bed. It seems like no one was talking about platform beds and then, suddenly, they were everywhere. In reality, platform beds are nothing new, but they’ve certainly gained momentum in recent years and have become one of the most popular and simple ways to update your bedroom.
And for good reason. There are many benefits to making the switch to a platform bed, such as:
- A more modern, minimalistic style
- The simplicity of not having to purchase a box spring or other extra foundation with a mattress
- Support of the platform slats can be better than with a box spring
- Improved stability and reduced wear on the mattress (support slats that are close together or a solid surface can be a great option for heavier-weight sleepers)

Will a platform bed fit in my space?
One of the best things about platform beds is the countless slim, low-profile options, which are perfect for even the smallest of spaces. If space is a concern, you can choose a frame that is lower to the floor or go with a lifted design that opens up space for storage underneath. There are also tall platform beds that include shelving or drawers at the base for a simple, aesthetically pleasing storage solution.
What platform bed material is best?
These days, you can find a platform bed constructed from anything your heart desires. Really, what it comes down to is budget and your preferred look.
Solid wood
Solid wood platform beds like our Wood Frame are durable and firm, with a high weight capacity and resistance to damage. Depending on the wood, however, solid wood can be very heavy, so if you live alone and think you’ll want to rearrange at some point, you should take weight into consideration when shopping. Additionally, solid wood can get expensive, so if you’re on a tight budget, you may want to save the solid wood purchase for down the road.
Metal frame
Metal platform bed frames are also a strong and sturdy option, and often have a slimmer, lighter-weight construction. Metal frames are relatively affordable, so if metal goes with your bedroom style, this may be your winner.
Manufactured wood
Particle board and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) are the most common manufactured materials, are the least expensive option for platform beds, and are often trendy and stylish in appearance, which is why they’re so popular. However, these frames offer less durability and longevity, so that’s something to keep in mind. Nonetheless, they are sturdy enough and get the job done.
DIY
Last, we’ve seen some really cool, creative do-it-yourself bed frames made from wood pallets that are pretty great and will give you lots of control over budget and the desired look you’re going for.
