If you enjoy hosting guests in your home, you know how important an inviting guest room is.

It’s the first thing your guests will see when they land and drop their bags, and can make or break a stay. When it comes to outfitting your guest room, a comfy place to crash is one of, if not the, most important aspects of creating the perfect environment for your friends and family. You want your guests to feel refreshed and cozy while they stay with you, and ready to get the most out of their visit.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you’re searching for the perfect place for your guests to rest and relax. First and foremost, you want comfort and quality without breaking the bank, so research what mattresses work best for your budget. Once you have a price range in mind, you can start planning for your guests.

Consider Your Guests Before you start moving furniture and decor into your guest room, think about the kinds of guests who frequent your neck of the woods. Are you hosting your brother and sister-in-law? Your grandkids? Maybe your parents or a college roommate?

Keep in mind who will get the most use out of your room and make considerations around their needs when mattress shopping. If you’re generally hosting younger kids who don’t have as many issues with neck or back pain, you might go with a different mattress then if you’re planning on hosting your older parents. If you very rarely host people, you might opt for a daybed or Murphy bed to conserve space and get multiple uses out of your room.

Comfort should be your first concern, and getting a great mattress that will last for years to come ensures your guests will want to come back, but won’t be suffering a few years. Check the warranty on your mattress and make sure you know exactly what’s covered so there are no surprises down the road.

Pro tip: Avoid purchasing a mattress last minute right before the holidays despite the tempting sales if you don’t have a backup plan. Everyone else waited, too, and you don’t want your guests to be stuck booking a hotel on Christmas Eve.

Consider Your Space Outside of comfort, size is probably the next factor you want to consider when shopping. The size of your space is a pretty controlling factor in this decision, so take into account that you don’t want your guest bumping into the bed when they are hanging up their clothes or crawling over each other to get to the bathroom.

Making the bed central to the room allows for breathing room on the sides and two guests should be plenty cozy settling in for the weekend. If a King size would block access to doors, closets, or windows, consider stepping down to a Queen. Most people find that a Queen is plenty of room even if they are used to sleeping in a King for a temporary visit.

If you rarely host more than one guest, a Full-size mattress might be the best way to maximize your room, though anything smaller may be uncomfortable for guests. If you’re generally visited by little ones, twin beds or bunk beds may also be a way to get the most out of your room.

Once you’ve decided on a size, the fun part begins! A comfy bed and the right space is the best foundation for a great guest room. Decor, amenities, and thoughtful additions tailored to your guests can upgrade your space and make your house the destination spot in your circle.
