Comfort & Support

Universal Comfort

Too Soft

An overly soft mattress provides poor support, bends the spine unevenly, and traps heat.

Not too soft, not too hard, our mattress evenly and comfortably distributes your body weight.

Too Hard

A mattress that's too firm doesn't correctly align your spine, and leads to uncomfortable pressure points.

No Tossing, No Turning, Just Sleeping.

Pressure Relief

Our foam adapts to your body weight, distributing it across a large area to create that float-like sleep.

Localized Bounce

Just the right rebound, without that quicksand sink-in or disturbing your partner.

Stay Cool

Here's How We Keep You Cool

Mattress flow 1

Heat Wicking

Heat is drawn into the mattress where cells work together to disperse heat outward and away from your body.

Excess heat is drawn quickly into the foam after you enter your mattress.

You're held closer to the surface to avoid the oven effect caused by sinking in too deeply.

Air flows through the foam cells to boost the speed of heat transfer through the mattress.

Why is my order status not being updated?

We do not update the order status until your mattress has shipped. Once your mattress has shipped you will receive an email with the shipping details. If more than a week has passed, please send us an email at support@tuftandneedle.com or let us know by phone at (877) 842-2586 so we can further assist.

Where is my package? FedEx Tracking page says it is delivered but I have not received it.

Send us an email right away and we will work with FedEx to track down your package. In the case that the carrier misplaced or delivered your package to the wrong address, it can take up to 2 business days for them to complete their investigation with the driver. We will continue to work with FedEx to get you your mattress as soon as possible.

How do I make use of the warranty if I think my Tuft & Needle Mattress might be defective?

Your Tuft & Needle Mattress is covered by warranty for 10 years against defects, and you can find the warranty here.

If you discover a defect in your Tuft & Needle, just email us support@tuftandneedle.com or give us a call at (877)842-2586 to let us know what's going on, and we'll go from there. A couple pictures may help illustrate your concern, so please include those when possible.

How do I unbox the mattress?

Position your mattress on top of your bed frame and find the ends of the plastic wrap stuck to the side of the roll. Pull on the end of the plastic until the mattress is completely unrolled.

Roll the mattress out so that it's flat, then pull off the remaining plastic. Let it expand 2-3 hours and your mattress will be ready for sleep!

Keep in mind that some of our mattresses are compressed to smaller than their expected size in order to make shipping easier. As soon as you fully remove the mattress from the plastic, it will expand to its correct size.

What size should I purchase?

Twin - Best for average height adults and children. This size typically fits trundle and bunk beds.
Twin XL - Recommended for taller youth and adults. This size is commonly seen in college dorms. Two Twin-XL side by side will almost equal a King size (it's not exact, but as close as you can get).
Full - A spacious, comfortable sleeping space for a single adult, but a tight sleeping space for two.
Queen - The most popular size for two sleepers.
King - The most space available width-wise. Great for two sleepers that like to spread out, or for sleeping with kids or pets.
California King - The most space available length-wise. Great for two sleepers, or for sleeping with kids or pets.

What is the mattress' foam density?

The foam we designed currently has a density of 2.9 lbs for our top layer and about 1.8 lbs for our base layer.

When shopping for a foam mattress, be sure to look for higher density foam. We recommend something at or above 1.8 lbs. Additionally, when looking for memory foam you'll want something even denser like 4+ lbs.

What do you mean by "platform," "slatted," "slats," "foundation," etc.?

Platform Bed Frame - Platform bed frames come in a variety of styles, and they either feature horizontal slats (think planks, usually wooden) or a solid platform for the mattress to rest on.

Slatted Bed Frame - A slatted bed frame is another way of saying platform frame and gets its name from the characteristic horizontal slats that support the mattress.

Slats - Slats are the planks that are usually placed horizontally on a slatted or platform frame. Their purpose is to support the mattress and their function is analogous to that of a box spring.

Metal Bed Frame - Sometimes called a Hollywood bed frame, the metal frame is a traditional bed frame that supports a box spring + mattress.

Box Spring - Traditionally featuring a wooden frame and springs, most modern box springs are, in fact, slatted or solid foundations. Their purpose is to provide even support under the mattress, and they work with either a metal bed frame or a platform bed.

Solid Foundation - A solid foundation provides the support of a platform frame or slats, though it looks very much like a box spring and is used the same way: metal frame + solid foundation + mattress. Most modern box springs are solid or slatted foundations.

Can the Tuft & Needle mattress be folded (for transport)?

The Tuft & Needle Mattress cannot be folded after it has expanded from the original packaging. The foam is too thick to fold properly and it can potentially damage the foam.

If you're looking to transport the mattress, it will move similarly to a traditional mattress but be a little more flexible. While it can't be folded, it will bend around corners and is lighter than traditional mattresses. Using straps to secure the mattress (like in a moving truck) should not damage the foam so feel free to use those options if necessary.

What makes up the foam core?

What's inside our Tuft & Needle Mattress is two layers of high-quality, high-performance foam, blended to our design and specifications. The bottom layer is a support layer of high-density polyfoam and the top layer is a comfort layer of Tuft & Needle Adaptive Foam, which is completely unique to Tuft & Needle. The foam has been tested to be safe by CertiPur standards and is long-lasting because of its density.

What is the edge support like in the Tuft & Needle Mattress?

The Tuft & Needle Mattress has the same support at the sides as it does at the center. When you lie down or sit on the edge of the mattress, you shouldn't feel like you're rolling or sliding off.

There isn't any internal structure that reinforces the edges of the mattress so if you like to sit on the edge of your bed, sitting further back towards the center of the mattress and keeping it lower to the ground will help.

Can the Tuft & Needle mattresses be stacked?

We don't recommend stacking the mattresses. When on top of one another, the mattress can become incredibly soft with little to no support. It's also wobbly and can be unsafe. It's best to use the mattress with a firm foundation to get the proper support and comfort.

We have iterated on a universal comfort with the parameters of a firm foundation such as a floor, slatted frame, or boxspring. Anything different would change the comfort to be something that we don't understand and haven't tested. Not only that, but it's not great for the health of the mattress over time.

How does the mattress feel to sleep on?

Our product team designed our mattress to fit the most people with the most comfort, providing proper support throughout the body and relieving critical pressure points.

How do I maintain my mattress if I use it on the floor?

With all mattresses, there is a chance of mildew when it lacks airflow, especially over an organic (e.g. cotton rug, plywood) or moist surface. If you live in a humid climate, we recommend that you use a bed frame that lifts the mattress off the ground.

For best care on the floor, we suggest that you regularly (once or twice a week) prop-up your mattress to refresh the air-flow; this will help keep your Tuft & Needle mattress dry and clean.

Does the Tuft & Needle mattress need a box spring?

The short answer is no. We like platform or slatted frames because they have a great aesthetic. It isn't necessary to purchase a box spring if you don't already have one, but you can use one if you'd like to.

How firm are the Tuft & Needle Mattresses?

Our mattress is designed to be plush on top while remaining supportive. Put differently, our mattresses are about a 6 or 7 on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being a feather pillow and 10 a hardwood floor.

We've designed our foam to work with those who like soft mattresses as well as those who like firm, so we encourage everyone to give us a try regardless of your usual preference. If you're not 100% satisfied, you can return it for a full refund.

Do I need to use a box spring with the Tuft & Needle mattress?

The T&N mattress is extremely versatile. Since it can be used directly on a slatted or platform frame, a box spring is entirely optional.

You can definitely use an existing box spring if you like the height it provides, or if your frame doesn't have enough support for the weight of the mattress. For example, a traditional metal frame with a mid-beam will require a boxspring in order to provide adequate support. Alternatively, the mattress can be used directly on the floor.

If you would like a boxspring recommendation, we like the Classic Brands Instant Foundation from Amazon.

Can I use the Tuft & Needle mattress with a heating pad?

Yes, you can use our Tuft & Needle mattress with a heating pad and it will not damage the foam. If you use a specific heating pad that works great, drop us a line and let us know.

Do I need to air the mattress?

In most cases, you won't need to air the mattress. We use spacer cloth on the mattress bottom to optimize air flow. For floor use in more humid climates, we suggest that you regularly prop-up your mattress to refresh the air-flow; this will help keep your Tuft & Needle mattress dry and clean.

Do you use a flame retardant?

Our fire barrier is essentially a fabric blend. It's mostly rayon, blended with small amounts of polyester and silica (very fine-grained sand). When it's blended like that, it's inherently flame retardant. This fabric blend fits on the mattress like a sock, underneath the cover, and there are no chemical flame retardants in our foam. Our fire barrier is TB117-2013 compliant.

Should I use a mattress protector? What should I look for in a mattress protector?

It isn’t necessary to use a protective cover with the mattress but if you’re concerned about pets, spills, etc., it can be beneficial to use one. The soft rayon and polyester cover that comes with mattress is not water-resistant. If you do decide to use one, we recommend choosing a protector that is moisture-resistant as well as breathable. A fitted sheet style will work best.

Best practice is to let the mattress air out for a day or two after delivery before putting on a protector. Please note that protectors tend to generate heat.

We like these covers on Amazon: SafeRest, Hospitology, and Luna.

Can you make custom sizes?

We're currently unable to offer any custom sizes because we're still a small company trying to meet the demands at our current capacity.

Will the mattress smell or off-gas?

Some people notice a new mattress smell for a few days, but it goes away quickly. Initially, we suggest letting the mattress air out by removing any sheets or mattress protector that cover it. You can leave our fabric cover on. The smell comes from the freshly new foam being packaged during transit and not from any harmful chemicals.

What is a bunky board and when would I use one?

A bunky board is essentially a very low profile foundation (similar in function to a box spring), and it works by providing nice, even support to the mattress without adding much height to the overall setup.

Can I have a sample of the foam or cover fabric?

We are currently unable to provide samples of our mattress. Our foams have been tested by CertiPUR-US for off-gassing, formaldehyde, and a host of other toxins. Feel free to read more about that here: http://certipur.us/pages/

What does the mattress look like?

Our mattress is designed with square edges and corners. Our Tuft & Needle logo is lightly woven into the fabric of the smooth white cover.

We have some awesome product photography on our website. Check out the Prices page to see photos from all sides of the mattress.

Can I sleep directly on my Tuft & Needle mattress?

You can, but you should always use sheets (and ideally a protector too). You'll get the most out of your Tuft & Needle mattress by washing or changing your sheets weekly.

What is the cover made of?

It is a high quality rayon and polyester performance fabric.

What types of mattress protectors are there?

There are three basic types of mattress protective covers: encasement, fitted-sheet and pad. Encasement is just like it sounds; the encasement protector completely covers the mattress. The second type of protector fits the mattress like a fitted sheet. Both styles of protector are popular with people who suffer from allergies. Mattress pads are the most minimal and typically have elastic straps at the corners to secure it to the mattress.

Do I need to flip my mattress?

Our foam core has been designed to have a specific top and bottom. Always keep the zippered side down.

What products work with the Tuft & Needle mattress?

Our mattress will most likely work with your current set-up or any set-up you might buy elsewhere. The most troublesome set-up issues can be resolved with extra slats from the manufacturer or a bunky board. If you have a question about your setup, feel free to shoot us an email or give us a call for guidance.

Here are a few products we recommend because they work well with our mattress:

Box Spring:
Classic Brands Instant Foundation

Bed Frame:
Narrow Leg Wood Bed Frame
Newport Simple Panel Bed
Nomad Platform Bed Frame

Mattress Pad:
Pinzon Basics Overfilled Ultra Soft Microplush Mattress Pad

Mattress Cover:
Waterproof Mattress Cover

The Tuft & Needle Mattress works well with any standard sheet set.

We use the Pure Beech Jersey Knit Sheet Set in our showroom and we have had plenty of positive feedback. We also really like Northern Nights for the Home and Restoration Hardware.

Can I clean the cover?

Don't machine wash or dry the mattress cover; it may shrink. Instead, unzip and remove the cover and spot clean with a mild detergent - gently dabbing the cover rather than rubbing it. Make sure the cleaned area is 100% dry before replacing the cover or placing sheets and blankets back on the mattress.

What are the dimensions of the Tuft & Needle Mattress?

The Tuft & Needle Mattress is 10-inches thick and matches standard mattress dimensions.
Twin: 39" x 75" x 10"
TwinXL: 39" x 80" x 10"
Full: 54" x 75" x 10"
Queen: 60" x 80" x 10"
King: 76" x 80" x 10"
Cal-King: 72" x 84" x 10"

What do I do with my old mattress?

As soon as your Tuft & Needle mattress arrives, we suggest our customers schedule a Salvation Army pickup or work with your local Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Local churches and homeless shelters are also good options.

Keep in mind that in order to donate used mattresses, they need to be rip, tear, and stain free. Usually, there are recycling services in your area which you can schedule to remove your old mattress for a small fee if a charity won't accept the donation.

Call or email us if you need some donation or recycling location suggestions and we'd be happy to help find some options in your area.

Once I send in my donation receipt, how long does it take to get my refund?

Once we receive your proof of donation, our system processes the refund within 24 to 72 hours. If you do not see it back in your account within 3-5 business days, contact your bank or financial institution for further information.

Where can I read reviews of the Tuft & Needle Mattress?

All of our reviews are genuine and by our real customers. Our mattress is highly rated (with over 2,400 reviews) on Amazon and you can read the reviews on Amazon.com.

Where can I try this out? Do you have a retail or store location?

Right now, we're all online with a small showroom in our office in Phoenix, Arizona. This is another big reason why our 100 night trial is so awesome. You can try the mattress for 100 nights, and if you don't like it for any reason, return it for a full refund.

If you're in the Phoenix area and you'd like to see our showroom, you can visit us 605 E. Grant St, Phoenix, AZ 85004. We're open 10am-6pm on weekdays and from 10am-4pm on Saturdays.

Can I get a replacement cover?

Tuft & Needle warrants any damages in the cover due to defects in materials and workmanship when used normally for a period of 10 years from the date of original purchase. Shoot us an email or give us a call if you have any concerns.

Does the Tuft & Needle mattress work on an adjustable bed frame?

Our mattress works great with most adjustable bed frames. The foam that we use in the mattress is very flexible and can easily bend to incline or recline as needed without causing damage to the mattress or voiding the warranty.

Generally speaking, when choosing a bed frame of any kind, the biggest concern is proper support for the mattress. Most adjustable bed frames offer a solid platform foundation, which will work perfectly with our mattress. Otherwise, a slatted bed frame, with slats no more than 4 inches apart, will also offer optimal support for the bed.

Why do you only offer a 10 year warranty when other companies offer 20 years?

Warranties that are more than 10 years are generally prorated, which means for every year you own it, you would receive less and less credit. The reality is, other companies make it extremely difficult to prove damage and redeem the warranty.

We help honor our customers loyalty by acting in good faith, and that means transparency, honesty, and accuracy in our pricing, and in our warranties. Send us some photographs, we'll help diagnose the issue, and we'd be happy to send a replacement per our warranty.

What if the foam forms irregular indentations and is getting body impressions?

This is unlikely to happen for at least 7-10 years. We consider increased softness such as body impressions or permanent indentations to fall under our 10 year warranty. If you observe a visible indentation greater than 3/4 of an inch (about the length of your thumb, from tip to knuckle) please let our team know so that we can help you replace the mattress.

What does the warranty cover?

The Tuft & Needle warranty covers manufacturing defects like body impressions or sagging, cover defects such as unraveling stitching, or flaws in the foam causing it to split or crack within 10 years from the original purchase date. Feel free to read the terms of our warranty here.

We don't cover changes to your mattress that are caused by or the result of normal wear and tear. Also, of course, we don’t cover changes caused by or resulting from circumstances or uses that go beyond the intended use of a mattress—namely, reclining and sleeping. For example, don't take your Tuft & Needle for a ride down the river.

Do you carry the frame or furniture pictured on your site?

Any furniture showed on our website is for visual purposes only. If you'd like to know the brands or products we use, we'd be happy to let you know. You can reach us by phone, email, live chat, or through Twitter @tuftandneedle or on Facebook at http://facebook.com/tuftandneedle

Is sales tax charged for my state?

Sales tax laws require us to pay sales tax on purchases made within states where we have physical operations. Right now, those states include New York, Virginia, Florida, Arizona, California, Georgia, Maryland, Washington D.C., and Massachusetts.

To find the exact amount you will be taxed, enter your shipping address into the Checkout flow (you don't need to enter a credit card to see). You will know the total price before you buy.

What is a Recycling Fee?

The Mattress Recycling Fee is something that we're required to collect by the state and we pass the funds along directly to the state government. Your contribution helps subsidize the state's mattress recycling program.

Even if you aren’t parting with your mattress right now, a mattress doesn’t last forever, and will eventually be discarded. The program uses a network of participating cities, towns, retailers, recyclers and other organizations to collect, transport and properly recycle your old mattress.

To learn more about the government initiative, go to byebyemattress.com.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is free within the contiguous United States.

There is an added shipping cost for orders sent to Alaska and Hawaii. The costs can vary between $120 and $190 depending on the size you purchase and the final destination.

This charge will be reflected in your shopping cart as you check out once you enter your shipping address. You will know the total cost before you buy.

Please note that in the event of a return, the extra shipping cost will not be refunded.

How long will it take for my mattress to arrive?

We ship FedEx Ground from our facilities in Southern California and Massachusetts. It usually takes us a day or two to craft your mattress and ship it, then transit times vary depending on where you live. See below for some transit times.

During the holidays, it can take around a week to receive your mattress. Please note that FedEx becomes especially busy over the holidays, so there may be shipping delays.

After processing, here are some average transit times, in business days, to our most popular cities:

Los Angeles - 1 day
New York - 1 day
Boston - 1 day
San Francisco - 2 days
Chicago - 4 days
Indianapolis - 4 days
Columbus - 4 days
Philadelphia - 2 days
Seattle - 3 days
Denver - 3 days
Dallas - 3 days
Austin - 3 days
Atlanta - 4 days
Orlando - 4 days

Remember to include a day or two of crafting time with the shipping estimates above to get the most accurate delivery time frame. Also note that delays can occur around the holidays.

Shoot us an email or give us a call for a better estimate of delivery to your specific location.

Can you expedite shipping? Do you have expedited shipping options?

We ship our Tuft & Needle mattress via FedEx Ground so we're unable to expedite the shipping or offer expedited shipping options. You can check out estimate transit times to your location after your mattress ships here.

How does Tuft & Needle compare to a memory foam mattress?

Although memory foam feels comfortable at first, its drawbacks are sleeping hot and lacking necessary support. Compared to memory foam, our Adaptive Foam's design offers consistent, healthy support and does not become hot during the night.

Do you offer financing?

As a small company, we're unable to provide any type of financing options at this time. We currently accept payment via Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.

Are there any discounts, promotions, or coupon codes?

We started Tuft & Needle because of our own experiences with mattress gimmicks. This industry is already full of discount programs that deceptively inflate prices and trick people into thinking they are getting a deal. We believe that everyone should get the same price—the fair price.

How does Tuft & Needle compare to a latex foam mattress?

Latex foam is known for being breathable and supportive though not the best material for pressure relief. Our foam provides enhancements over latex with support, breathability, and pressure relief but at a much lower cost. It's important to note that all latex foams used in mattresses are not 100% natural when others claim them to be—at most they are about 95% natural due to the curing package required to set the material. Latex normally is synthetic and is in many cases 0% to 30% natural due to chemicals and fillers.

Do I have to ship it back in its original box if I decide to return?

With the exception of New York returns, you do not need to keep the packaging. If you live in New York, we recommend keeping the plastic to make donations or recycling easier.

Instead of shipping it back to us, we work together to donate the mattress to a nearby charity. Send us a scanned or photographed copy of your receipt and we'll process your full refund. If no charity is available nearby for donation, we'll arrange a 3rd party pickup for the mattress.

What is the price of your mattress?

We sell one model of mattress in the traditional sizes, and prices vary by size. You can find them listed here as well as listed below:

Twin: $350
Twin XL: $375
Full: $500
Queen: $600
King: $750
Cal King: $750

Is the return process different if I ordered through Amazon?

All returns and customer support questions should go through Amazon's support. We're always here to help with general questions, but they'll handle all returns or exchanges.

Please note that the 100 night sleep trial is only valid for orders purchased directly from the Tuft & Needle website. The sleep trial for orders purchased through Amazon is 30 nights.

Follow these few steps to begin your Amazon return:

1. Go to the Amazon return page at https://www.amazon.com/returns/order
2. Find your item in the list
3. Click "Return or Replace Item"
4. Amazon will help schedule a removal or arrange return shipping

If your mattress was purchased directly from Tuft & Needle, then we will handle all aspects of your order and you can reach out to us by email, chat, or phone for help with returning or claiming the warranty.

What's the difference between Amazon and Tuft & Needle?

The biggest differences between our two websites are the Sleep Trial and returns.

Orders purchased through Tuft & Needle's website automatically come with a 100 Night Sleep Trial and all customer support will be handled by Tuft & Needle.

Orders purchased through Amazon come with a 30 Night Sleep Trial per their traditional 30-day return policy. All customer service, including returns and exchanges, will go through Amazon Customer Support. In the event of a return, they'll arrange a pickup of the mattress or help with return shipping.

For both vendors, you should not expect any cost to complete your return and obtain a refund.

Is the Tuft & Needle mattress safe?

Our mattress is tested by CertiPur, a 3rd party foam certifier, to be free from known harmful chemicals and gasses. More specifically, our mattress is tested to be free from ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates, and low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).

For more information, check out CertiPur's website here.

If Tuft & Needle is such a great mattress, why does it cost so little?

Surprisingly, it doesn't cost a ton of money to craft a comfortable mattress with quality ingredients. We make quality mattresses and offer them for an honest price. It’s such a straight-forward system, you’d think more people would follow it.

What is the Sleep Trial?

We believe that you have to spend more than a few minutes on a mattress to know if it's right for you. That's why we offer the 100 night sleep trial. If you don't like it, we'll take it back with no questions asked, but feedback is always appreciated.

Please note that the 100 night sleep trial applies to orders purchased directly through Tuft & Needle's website. Any orders placed through Amazon will have a 30 night sleep trial.

What type of bed frame should I use with the mattress?

Tuft & Needle mattresses are designed to be compatible with most options such as a slatted frame (make sure the slats are no more than 4 inches apart!), platform frame, box spring, hardwood floor or synthetic carpeted floor.

What kind of mattress is a Tuft & Needle?

The Tuft & Needle Mattress is a high-quality, high-performance foam mattress made in the USA. Our foam, called Tuft & Needle Adaptive Foam, is completely unique to our brand because we actually invented it. It's neither memory foam nor latex, but better. Our Adaptive Foam combines pressure relief, support, and breathability, which no other kind of foam offers.

Designed to be a single firmness, we are continuously tweaking the specifications to be universally comfortable for everyone. Our foam supports the natural posture of your spine, relieving back, shoulder, and neck problems and naturally breathes so you don't sleep hot.

Can you ship to Alaska or Hawaii?

We do ship to Alaska and Hawaii!

Due to the increased costs of shipping, a charge is added to orders sent to an Alaska or Hawaii address. The shipping costs range from $120-$190 per mattress, based on model, size, and destination.

This charge will be reflected in your shopping cart as you check out. You will know the total cost before you buy.

Please note that in the event of a return, the extra shipping cost will not be refunded.

How do I return my mattress?

To return your mattress, we work together to donate it to a local charity or non-profit. It's that easy. Once your mattress is donated, send us a scanned or photographed copy of your donation receipt via email and we'll process your refund in full.

We're experts at finding donation locations. If you're unsure of where to donate or need help, just let us know by phone or email support@tuftandneedle.com; we'd be happy to help find places! If we can't find a donation location, then we'll coordinate with a 3rd party pickup service free of charge.

NOTE: If you recently received your mattress, we recommend allowing 1-2 weeks of use before initiating your return. It can take a little bit of time for your mattress to break in, and for you to become acclimated to it.

Please keep in mind that Amazon customers have a 30 Night Sleep Trial, rather than the 100 Night Sleep Trial offered for purchases made through our website.

What is the weight capacity of the Tuft & Needle Mattress?

The Tuft & Needle will support up to 500 lbs per person, for a total of 1000 lbs on a two sleeper mattress.

What kind of sheets will fit my Tuft & Needle mattress?
